Shopify rolled native B2B out to every plan in April 2026 — company profiles, up to 3 catalogs, quantity rules, volume discounts, net terms, vaulted cards, and ACH are now included on Basic, Grow, and Advanced, not just Plus. That closes the old “you need Plus for B2B” gap. It doesn’t close every gap: Shopify B2B still requires assigning every wholesale buyer to a Company record before pricing applies, it still doesn’t ship a storefront quote form, a multi-product quick order page, store gating, or cart-level order limits, and its quantity rules and volume discounts are scoped to a catalog rather than a customer tag. BTB Wholesale adds the depth and the missing workflows on top of your existing retail storefront — no Company setup required, and it works whether or not you’re running Shopify B2B underneath.
What changed in April 2026
Before April 2026, Shopify B2B — company profiles, catalogs, quantity rules, volume discounts, net terms — was Plus-only. That’s no longer true. Shopify now ships all of it on Basic, Grow, and Advanced, with Plus keeping one advantage: unlimited B2B catalogs versus 3 on the lower plans. Shopify’s own announcement cites up to 33% more self-serve orders and up to 20% higher reorder frequency among merchants who turn B2B on.
This matters for how BTB should be evaluated. BTB’s pitch was never “skip Shopify B2B” — it’s deeper targeting rules, plus the handful of storefront workflows Shopify B2B has never shipped, on any plan. With native B2B now free on every tier, that’s the whole pitch.
Shopify B2B pricing and catalogs only apply to a buyer once you’ve created a Company record for them in the admin and assigned it a catalog — a per-buyer setup step before anything else works. BTB’s customer-tag pricing skips that step entirely: tag a customer “wholesale” (or match them on any of 8 conditions — tag, spend, login state, Shopify B2B Company, and more) and the rule applies immediately, on your regular retail storefront. If you’ve already built out Companies, BTB can target those too — the two systems aren’t mutually exclusive.
Depth: what native quantity rules and volume discounts can’t do
Native quantity rules and volume discounts are scoped to a catalog, not a customer tag. To give one segment of wholesale buyers a different minimum order quantity or a different discount tier than another, you need a separate catalog — and catalog structure, on non-Plus plans, tops out at 3.
BTB’s MOQ and B2B Discounts target directly by tag or lifetime spend, no catalog required. MOQ rules can be scoped to a vendor, a whole product, or a specific variant, and product- and vendor-level minimums are enforced across product, collection, search, cart, and quick-view pages — not just the PDP the way native quantity rules typically show up.
Coverage: five workflows Shopify B2B doesn’t ship at any plan
Beyond depth, five storefront workflows are missing from Shopify B2B on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus alike. The closest native piece is the Quick order list, which covers one product’s variants at a time; the other four are simply absent. BTB ships all five:
| Workflow | Shopify B2B | BTB |
|---|
| Storefront Quote Form (RFQ) | Not shipped — buyers email you, deals cool in an inbox. | 3-step storefront wizard with per-item notes, an admin inbox with reference numbers, and a pending → reviewed → quoted → accepted status workflow. |
| Quick Order Form | Per-product only — the native Quick order list shows one product’s variants on its product page. For a multi-product order, buyers click through every product page or email a SKU + quantity list. | Search + cart + table page so buyers fill a 50-SKU cart in under a minute. A Shopify Plus variant lives inside the customer account portal. |
| Store Lock & Hide Pricing | No storefront-side gating — your store is either fully public or you move to Shopify B2B’s separate Company-gated storefront. | Hide prices, hide add-to-cart, or both, scoped per page type. Unlock by customer login or a shared passcode. |
| Cart-level Order Limits | Native quantity rules are per-product; cart-wide minimums or maximums need a custom Shopify Function. | Four rule types — per-product, per-collection, cart-quantity, cart-amount — with live in-cart messaging, no code. |
| Wholesale Discount Codes | Generic discount codes exist, but with no customer-tag condition or volume math built into the code itself. | Codes gated by customer tag or spend, with volume tiers and Shopify-native usage caps, purpose-built for B2B. |
The gap runs deeper on non-Plus plans specifically: native B2B there has no wholesale registration form, no multi-product bulk order form (the Quick order list is per product), no customer-tag-based pricing, and B2B catalogs don’t carry over to Shopify POS.
One install vs. a stack of apps
Once a store outgrows native B2B’s 3-catalog cap, the usual advice is to either upgrade to Shopify Plus or stack separate apps to cover what’s missing — typically one app for wholesale pricing, a second for storefront locking, and a third for order forms. That’s three admin panels, three billing lines, and three integrations that all have to keep working together on the same theme.
BTB bundles all 10 features — the five above plus Wholesale Pricing, B2B Discounts, MOQ, Shipping Rules, and Payment Rules — into a single install. One admin, one theme integration, Growth and Advanced plans with a 7-day free trial on both.
When to use Shopify B2B, BTB, or both
Use native Shopify B2B — on its own or as your foundation — when you need net payment terms, ACH payments, vaulted credit cards, or Company/PO-grade account structure for a sales-rep-managed buyer base. That’s real infrastructure BTB doesn’t attempt to replace.
Add BTB alongside Shopify B2B when you want customer-tag depth on top of your Companies, or when you need any of the five workflows above. Use BTB alone, without turning on Shopify B2B at all, if you want wholesale pricing and storefront workflows on your existing retail store without taking on Company-account setup. All three paths are common, and none of them is wrong — it depends on how much account-management overhead you’re willing to carry.
